300

2.5 Stars

I recently saw 300. Here’s a quick description from the site:

“Based on the epic graphic novel by Frank Miller, “300″ is a ferocious retelling of the ancient Battle of Thermopylae in which King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army”

I had fairly high hopes for this film, not so much for the story, but for the visuals. It has a very stylized look to it. In addition to the many computer generated backgrounds, the entire film has a look similar to HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography, and is overly saturated.

Although the film does look awesome, I found it to be only moderately entertaining. I don’t think it was really worth 2 hours in the theater. I personally think that everything you need to see is in the trailers.

I wouldn’t actively discourage someone from seeing 300, but I would caution them to go in with reasonable expectations.

  1. Thanks for the tip. I’ve heard from friends that it was pretty good and I was planning on going, but it just doesn’t seem very entertaining. I don’t want to sit and watch people fighting and dying for 2 hours. Maybe when it comes out on DVD…

  3. I went to see it last night at the imax in London. The screen there is absolutely huge! I have to say I came away slightly disappointed. However, if you do want to watch it, I would definitely recommend seeing it on a big screen so that you can really appreciate the time and effort that was put in to creating some stunning visuals.

  7. I enjoyed the movie, but I didn’t have unrealistic expectations. I knew it was going to be a bloody rendition of the legend of 300 Spartans. I thought the level of humor was perfect – with just enough little one-liners to make you grin without making it a joke of a movie.

Not spectacular, no, but it was entertaining and worth my money.
